On 1/16/24, I planted several types if seeds. When I choose seeds to plant, I think about which foods do I like to eat. Then I also consider which foods that I like are the most nutrient dense. One of them I planted was Swiss chard.

Swiss chard can be considered a superfood. It contains high amounts of vitamin K, vitamin C and vitamin A. It also has a good amount of magnesium and antioxidants.
Swiss chard is in the same plant family as spinach and beets but is often compared to kale.
Swiss chard does well in cool and hot temperatures which makes it a good choice for me here in planting zone 6B.
Swiss chard is a biennial plant. Biennials complete their life cycle in two growing seasons. During the first growing season, biennials produce roots, stems and leaves. During the second growing season they produce flowers, fruits and seeds and then they die. Biennial plants usually overwinter underground. So when you plant them outdoors they may come back the following year.
I usually treat my Swiss chard as an annual. However, this year I plan to leave them to overwinter for next year. I will see how it goes. I will be transplanting these into a larger container soon. As it is only the beginning of March now, they will stay indoors until it warms up outside a bit more. Then I will move them outdoors.
